Why aren't my laptop speakers working?

My laptop speakers suddenly aren't working - they're not on mute or anything, the sound is turned right up, there's just no sound coming out. I used an audio in cable to connect the laptop to a pair of speakers and i accidentally yanked it out by catching my foot on the cable - could this have damaged my speakers?
