The best kind of flat ballet shoes?

I began ballet about a year ago. I have these leather ballet shoes (flimsy leather) and they only tighten by a string at the start where you can see your foot near the beginning. To me they are difficult to feel the ground as I do ballet and I was curious as to if I could either shrink them to fit my foot better or get a different style flat ballet shoe. ( I'm not ready for pointe shoes yet so..)
